Due Diligence. (read this first)

Lately, I've received a number of e-mails from families who have hired nannies only to be surprised by some of their actions later on. Some of these actions have resulted in the families needing to find new nannies. All I can say is DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Remember you are hiring someone to watch your most priceless possessions in the world and because of that, it may require more due diligence on your part.

For example, if you are joining a nanny share that is already in place - i.e. you found a family with a nanny that you will now share, make sure that you interview the nanny yourself and do a trail day or even two or three of your own with the nanny. It may mean extra child care coordination for the other family, but it is worth it in the long run. Just because the nanny is great with one family does not mean that she will be a good fit for yours.

Another common situation I hear from families is that they feel like they have no idea what their nannies do all day with the kids. One simple action may be to have the nanny write down the children's schedule in a notebook. It does not need to be so formal - just when they played, where they played and with whom. Ask the nanny to write down what the kids ate for meals, snacks, when they went to the bathroom, changed diaper, took a nap, woke up - things that are important for parents to know when they take over for the evening and the nanny leaves.
If the nanny is not eager to do this, tell her that it's really important to you. And if she continues not to buy into the idea, you have to wonder why she doesn't want you to know about what your kid(s) are doing during the day.

Now, unfortunately, you may be in a situation where the nanny is writing everything down, but she is not telling the truth. For example, she may write that the kids played with Bobby and Jack in the morning and you happen to run into Bobby and Jack's mom over the weekend and it turns out the kids didn't play together at all. In our case, I knew who my kids were playing with and I ran into one of the moms and we started talking about nap times and it appeared that our kids had total opposite nap schedules and we were amazed that our kids ever got together, but according to my nanny, the kids were playing together every single day. It turns out that my nanny was skipping the kids' first nap so that she didn't have to rush back home and could stay hanging out with her nanny friends. Of course, my kids weren't in danger and they were probably having fun playing with their friends, but they were missing one of their two naps and the nanny and i had not discussed dropping one of the naps. To make a long story short, we soon ended our relationship with the nanny and found a new one.

My point is that sometimes it's not just enough for nannies to tell us what is going on during our kids' day and/or even writing it down in a daily journal. As parents, we have to do our due diligence and make sure our kids are where they are supposed to be. It may mean speaking to the parents of your kids' friends, neighbors, other families you meet in the park on the weekends or evenings, your doorman and/or super.

I agree that it's hard to believe that you cannot necessarily trust your child's caretaker, but I'd rather spend the extra time and effort completing my due diligence to find out that everything is fine versus not doing it at all and finding out down the road that my nanny had been taking the kids to the playground but not letting them out of their strollers to play (that happened to us too).

Shareournanny.com; in the beginning. (read this first)

So we've been looking for a nanny share since before N. was born. I've talked to a few dozen families - honestly all women, and we've met with a handful of families. We thought we found the perfect nanny share in June - we met with the family - we totally hit it off and we thought, family to share a nanny with, check. A week after Nate was born in July, the mom of the nanny share told me she didn't think they could pursue this child care option, and once again we were back to square one - no family to share a nanny with. As the search continued, I delved into the world of child care options and spent a lot of time researching what it would mean exactly to share a nanny with another family. As I spoke to more families (again, mostly women would speak to me), I realized that there is no real platform/web site/list serv/agency to help families like ours meet other families who would be interested in sharing a nanny. I actually wanted to start a Web site on the topic but after speaking to several IT folks and graphic designers, I realized that it would cost at least a $1000 to get the site up and running. So for now, I am writing a blog and will try to find nanny share matches this way. I will also post information about what a nanny share is, whatit entails and the positive and negative aspects of this child care option. Let's see how it goes.

Why a Nanny Share? & Where Do I Begin? (read this first)

Why a nanny share?

Why not?

Are you looking for affordable childcare in the NYC area?

Has everyone you've talked to about this topic scared the living daylights out of you?

Let me guess - You attempted to look at day cares in Manhattan and it turns out you were supposed to place your child on the waiting list prior to conception?
You find out that day care isn't necessarily cheaper than having a nanny.
You decide, alright, I'm going to find a nanny and then you don't know where to start and you don't know if you can swing the cash output every week (between $500-$650 each week, rain or shine).

Well, you've come to the right blog.

My hope is that this blog will answer all your nanny share questions, as well as help you find another family to share a nanny with.

Here's how this nanny share match finder will work (and please remember I am still ironing out the details).

Email me, Sharon, the creator/administrator of this blog at shareournanny.com@gmail.com with the type of nanny share you are looking for.

Your email should include the following information:
1. First name
2. Contact information – email address or phone or both
3. Age of child
4. Already have a nanny
OR
Searching for a nanny and a nanny share
5. Days and hours needed
For example, full time, M-F 8 am – 6pm
OR
Monday, Tu, Wed 8 am – 2pm
6. Neighborhood you live in
7. Are you willing to drop off your child at someone else's apt?
If yes, what area are you willing to go to?
For example, you live in Washington Heights but work in mid-town. You are happy to drop off your child somewhere on the UWS providing it's off the 1 subway line.
8. Do you have any pets?
9. Does your child have any allergies?
10. Does your building have an elevator (think double stroller!)?
11. Does your neighborhood have a playground, nice places to walk? You will want the nanny to be spend time outside with the children.
12. Would you be interested in signing up (and paying for) a "nanny and me" music class or gym class?
13. Does your household have any dietary restrictions (vegan, vegetarian, kosher, etc)?
14. When would you be able to start nanny share?
ASAP or beginning of the month, etc.
15. Any other relevant information you would like to share?

I will post your nanny share ad on the blog. If someone is interested in getting in touch with you, she/he can simply respond to your ad by posting a comment.

If you feel comfortable sharing e-mail addresses, then you may do so through the blog (keep in mind it is public).

If you are NOT comfortable sharing your information this way, email me at shareournanny.com@gmail.com and I will contact both parties via email.

If you are looking to see what nanny share situations are currently available, scroll through the blog.

The only way this FREE nanny share referral service will work is by sharing this blog with as many families as possible. I will also do my best to get in touch with other NY Metro baby-related organizations, Web sites, (i.e. BabyBitesNYC, BigCity Moms, Urbanbaby etc) to make sure that they are are aware of this blog. In addition, I would like to create a PDF of a flyer advertising this service blog so that parents like you can download the pdf and post it at your pediatrician's office, dentist office, ob/gyn, library, local bagel store, synagogues, churches, etc etc.

The success of this blog is in our hands – the more families are aware of it, the greater chance of finding another family that matches your nanny share needs.

Because figuring out child care sucks/Is a nanny share right for you and your family?

What am I doing writing this blog?

I’m not really into writing and frankly more interested in listening to the father-daughter convo to the right of me as they debate which liquor to buy for an anniversary party.

I look like a freakin' housewife right now, or what a housewife sometimes looks like on tv.
My black yoga/exercise pants are torn, my shirt is stained with formula kisses and my hair is half up/half down with a broken banana clip. I just looked down at my feet to make sure my shoes match. They do, for the record.

So back to my original question, why start this blog?

Because figuring out which childcare option is best for you and your family SUCKS.

I don’t know anyone who has enjoyed the process, yet we all live to tell about it so it can’t be that bad.
What doesn’t kill you does make you stronger and lots of coffee loaded with Splenda helps as well.
First, you have to decide whether you are going back to work.
I always knew I would, but I know that some moms (and dads) really aren’t sure, and that’s okay.
When the time comes and you have to make a decision, you will.
And if you realize it’s not the best decision for you, then you have every right to change your mind. Nothing is set in stone.
Then if you do return to work, will you return full time?

It is helpful to know the answers to these questions because you first need to figure out what hours you need childcare for.

Full time childcare is usually Monday-Friday 8 am – 6 pm (for a total of 50 hours or more/week).
Part time childcare can range from anywhere between 15-20 hours a week or more.
Obviously, days and times will vary.

Process outlined in steps:
Figure out your child care needs.
Decide between nanny or day care.
Nanny or nanny share.

If it’s nanny share, please think about the following:

1. What kind of nanny share situation would be ideal for you?
*You would share a nanny with another family and the other family will always drop their child at your home (i.e. your apt becomes home base).

OR

*You will alternate with the other family the location of nanny share.
Sometimes, the nanny will watch both children at your apartment and sometimes you will bring your child over to the other family’s apt.

2. How far you are willing to travel to share nanny (10 blocks, two stops on subway, etc)?
If you are going to do the traditional nanny share and switch homes every other week or so, I recommend a 10-block radius at the most. Think about really snowy days or really wet, rainy days – transport of child should be kept at a minimum.

3. You should also keep in mind that having a nanny watch two children at your home requires space – you need to store a double stroller, a pack and play of sorts for other baby to sleep, another high chair (more of all of these nanny share logistics later.).

It may actually make sense for the nanny share to take place exclusively at the home of the other apartment depending on space constraints.

Or perhaps you work from home and it would be distracting to have a nanny plus two babies at home with you. You may realize that a nanny and just one child (your own!) may be too distracting so perhaps a nanny share at the other family's home may be right for you!

It's important to think about all of these issues and be creative about your child care solutions!

Some more logistics to think about when considering a nanny share. (read this first)

I've been asked to comment on other details to consider when forming a nanny share. Here are some things just off the top of my head:
space!!! think about the fact that your apartment should comfortably be able to accommodate two children and a nanny and a slew of other fun items:
a pack and play for the other child
a second high chair for feeding time
diapers, wipes, diaper cream for two children
extra sheets, bedding blanket for other child
other child's clothes and food (we have a bin to put all this stuff in)
bottles, bowls, spoons to feed two children at the same time
extra toys
a double stroller (we bought a used phil and ted plus we have our own single stroller) this probably takes up the most space

also, we have two separate daily calendars for each of the two kids so that the nanny can write down every little thing that they do and that the two families know when their kids are napping, eating and pooping.

Nanny Share Salaries (read this first)

Nanny Share Salaries
I recently got asked about what is the average pay for a nanny who is watching two children from two different families at the same time. The range is anywhere between $650-$950 a week (and then divide that amount in half and that is what each family pays). While this range seems huge, it is really up to what each family is comfortable paying. Other things to discuss include paid vacation time (the standard is 10 days paid), metro card, money for lunch each day, paid sick time, paying for cell phone. My only piece of advice is to not go over your head financially. In other words, your base salary should leave enough wiggle room for raises in the future and holiday time bonuses. You don't want to start your nanny at such a high weekly salary that you can't afford to ever give her a raise.

If anyone is willing to share any advice about nanny share salaries, please either respond by commenting on the blog or write to me and i'll post it.

Thanks much,
Sharon

Nanny Expectations (Read this first)

nanny expectations.
Here is a list that I created detailing what I would like our nanny to do. This is just one example of nanny responsibilities and may be used as a guide for other families. Please note the responsibilities that are nanny share specific.

Provide three references
Must have infant and toddler experience
Must have some twins experience (nanny share specific)
Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm, with occasional evenings
52 weeks of pay
Weekly salary
Paid each Friday
10 days vacation: 5 days own choice; 5 days family chooses (may need to be adjusted due to nanny share)
Provide at least one month notice for week long vacation
Provide backup babysitter when not available (this is especially hard because the back up care has to be comfortable taking care of two kids at once)
Must be comfortable with parent working from home occasionally
Experience with working moms
Familiar with neighborhood
Must be comfortable with participating in nanny share with another
family (nanny would watch two children at once)
Must be comfortable with other people in apartment (cleaning lady,
grandparents stopping by, parents coming in/out of apartment)
Light housekeeping and running errands
Walking baby in stroller
Playground when age appropriate
Singing
Reading
Arranging playdates - if you want your nanny to arrange playdates, it's helpful for her to be friendly and social
Attending activities including: music class, Story hour at library, nearby bookstores
Keep baby on sleep schedule, 2-4 naps a day (a nanny share requires the nanny to accommodate two different sleeping schedules)
Keep baby on feeding schedule (a nanny share requires the nanny to accommodate two different feeding schedules)
Prepare bottles and food (when age appropriate) (for both kids)
Cleaning bottles and all items related to feeding (for both kids)
Changing baby's diaper and throwing diaper away in garbage can in kitchen
Bathe and feed baby each evening before parents arrive (this may only apply to one of the kids) Stock diaper bag
Clean stroller
Clean up after play
Maintain baby's room
Do baby's laundry (washer/dryer in apartment)
Letting each family know when an item is needed (i.e. formula)
Nanny should not talk on cell phone for any extended period of time while baby is awake
Nanny should not watch TV when baby is awake
Trial period - $15/hour

Some very specific nanny share things to consider:
*Nanny must be comfortable taking direction from two different families who may have varying opinions on sleeping, eating, activity and gd knows what else

*Nanny must be able to communicate with each family separately; One family should not be communicating with the other family on behalf of the nanny (this happened to me; not good!)

*Each family must decide on how they will communicate with nanny (either text, email, phone, whatever works) and nanny must be aware and comfortable with this arrangement

* Nanny must have lots of energy; taking care of two walking, active toddlers takes a lot of stamina; there is not really a time to just sit and relax

*Nanny must keep track of when supplies are running low for both families (i.e. diapers, wipes, formula, jarred food, etc)

*If nanny is doing pick up and drop off for one family, the other family should not be involved at all except to know when they should expect the nanny each morning and when a parent needs to be home in the evening
