Nanny talk: weekly hours.

I am often asked to define full time vs. part time.

I think of full time as thirty five or more hours a week, being paid a weekly salary and receiving overtime.
I think of full time as about thirty hours or less a week, being paid on an hourly basis so overtime is irrelevant.

When discussing full time hours with a nanny, I would stress that it's a fifty hour week vs. a Monday - Friday 8am-6pm work day. This arrangement allows the nanny to leave early some days yet work late some nights during a fifty hour week. So if a nanny needs to take a half day on a Friday, she does not need to take a half day of vacation rather she can work an extra night or two and make up the difference.

Likewise, this arrangement leaves some flexibility in the work week for the family, too. If you know you'll be home early on a Friday afternoon meaning the nanny can go home early that day, you may ask her to stay later on a night that works for both you and her so that it is still a fifty hour week. I would not make this a weekly change in schedule, and would assure the nanny that for the most part it will be Monday -Friday, 8 am-6pm, you just want to leave flexibility so both the family and nanny can have some wiggle room in the week.

Nanny talk: checking references.

Since many families ask me about finding and hiring a nanny, I've decided to post the information that I share.
Tonight's topic is references.

Checking references is one of the most important things you can do before hiring someone to hire your most precious valuables - your children. I ask potential nannies to list at least three references, their names, the kids' ages, length of employment, child care situation (full time/part time/temp) and location of where babysitting take place. Some nannies may have only one or two references and that is fine as long as the reasoning for why there are such few references makes sense. Some nannies may be on their second job and so they only have one reference - the question to ask is are you calling this reference? I know one family who interviewed a nanny whose last job ended badly - my friend insisted on calling them anyway and it turns out that while things ended badly, the family still recommended the nanny.

I would be concerned when a nanny says she's been working for ten years yet only has one reference from a family she worked for a few years ago. I would dig deeper and find out what happened to the family she worked for between then and now and why she couldn't give out that family as a reference. If the nanny's explanation does not add up, I would be hesitant to hire her.

Basically, you want to account for the length of time your nanny says she has been working. If the nanny says she's been working for the last ten years, you want to know which families she worked for in the last ten years and if there are gaps, ask why? It is up to you to complete the due diligence.

I've been told that there are some instances when a nanny gives out one of her family members or a close friend as a reference. This is where the employer information you asked your nanny to write down comes in handy. Verify with each family the location, age of children, length of employment and make sure that that information matches up with what the nanny wrote down when she listed her references. This is the time to verify the information the nanny shared with you and any discrepancies should raise a red flag. If you really think this nanny would be a great fit for your family, discuss the discrepancies with the nanny and allow her to explain what happened.

Also, I try to call and hear from all three references that the nanny lists. In one instance, I was able to speak to two out of three references. I just assumed the third reference was away and didn't get a chance to call back. Boy, was I wrong. The third reference ended up being horrible. HORRIBLE. This mom couldn't believe that the nanny had given her name as a reference; she was astonished.

And looking back on it now, the first two references were just okay; not great, not terrible, just okay. Also the nanny hadn't worked for these families for that long; she was basically their very temporary babysitter. At the point at which the nanny gave me the references to call, I should have specifically asked about the nature of the job and then I would have realized that both of these positions were very short term and temporary. The other moral of this story is that just because the nanny lists the family as a reference does not necessarily mean that the family will give a positive recommendation.

So bottom line: due your homework. Ask your nanny specific questions about her employer history, verify and speak to at least three references and insist that you speak to her last employer even if things didn't end up positively.
